B

Bread Crumb Trails

A record of a vehicle’s route, charted on a map or satellite image. Fleet Manager defines this as Vehicle Trails.

Buy Here, Pay Here

Car dealerships selling to individuals with damaged credit that provide their own financing. They have an interest in reclaiming a vehicle should the buyer fail to make their arranged payments.

C

CDMA

Code Division Multiple Access. A digital radio system used for sending voice and data that permits several radios to share the same frequency.

CEP

Circular Error Probability. Used to calculate accuracy of location based on the radius of a circle.

CSV

Comma Separated Values. Standard data format.

Cold Start

Describes a GPS that has lost the locations of the last satellites used, its own previous location information, UTC time, and the ‘almanac’ of locations of all satellites. Slowest response of current location information.

CTIA – The Wireless Association

Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association. Industry trade group representing a variety of interests on behalf of the wireless telecommunications industry.

E

ELD

Electronic Logging Device. Device used to electronically log driver activity and verify Hours of Service (HOS). The use of these in long-haul operations has been mandated by the DOT/FMCSA. When used internally, this term generally refers to VisTracks Hours of Service Gold, a product white-labeled as ELD Fleet™.

ELOGS

Abbreviation for “electronic logs”. When used internally, this term generally refers to ATS e-Track, a product white-labeled as GPS Trackit ELOGS.

EOBR

Electronic On-Board Recorder. Device used to electronically log activity for drivers, including Hours of Service (HOS).

ESN

Electronic Serial Number. Created by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to uniquely identify mobile devices. ESNs are currently mainly used with CDMA phones.

F

FCC

Federal Communications Commission.

Fleet Advisor

GPS Trackit’s branded title associated with Customer Service Specialists/Representatives.

Fleet Manager

GTC’s flagship product. This software’s primary intent is to provide a comprehensive suite of fleet management tools and features to support the tracking of the GPS devices sold by GPS TrackIt.

Fleet Trackit

The rebranded name of Fleet Manager for accounts moved to the AWS System.

FSM Driver

Field Service Management Driver, GPS Trackit’s field service/mobile workforce management solution.

FTP

File Transfer Protocol. Standard network protocol used to transfer files from one host to another over networks like the Internet.

G

G3000

GPS Trackit’s white-label name for Geometris WhereQube – ELD Fleet hardware

Garmin

A navigation device used to determine a route based on point of origin and destination. Offers ‘turn by turn’ navigation and messaging capabilities. Integrates with the Locator 2000 product.

Geofence

A user-defined virtual boundary used to trigger an event when crossed by a tracking device.

GCF

Global Certification Forum. An active partnership between mobile network operators, mobile device manufacturers and the test industry responsible for creating an independent certification program to help ensure global interoperability between mobile devices and networks.

GPRS

General Packet Radio Service. A packet-oriented mobile data service that typically charges by volume of data.

GPS

Global Positioning System. A network of satellites in Earth orbit that provide location information.

GPS Trackit

Brand/Company name. Written “GPS Trackit”, with a space in between, Capital “T”, lowercase “i”.

GPS Trackit Certified Installer (GTCI)

A subcontractor/hardware installer registered with and certified by GPS Trackit

GSM

Global System for Mobile Communications. A standard set by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute to describe technologies for second generation (2G) digital cellular networks.

G3000

A Series of devices offered by GPS Trackit. This Series contains the G3000-OBD (AT&T/T-Mobile SIM Device), the G3000-JBUS6 (AT&T/T-Mobile SIM Device) and the G3000-JBUS9 (AT&T/T-Mobile SIM Device). G3000 devices feature an internal GPS antenna, internal backup battery and FMCSA-compliant electronic logging support.

This G3000 device plugs directly into a vehicle’s 6-Pin ECM Port.

G3000-JBUS9

This G3000 device plugs directly into a vehicle’s 9-Pin ECM Port.

G3000-OBD

This G3000 device plugs directly into a vehicle’s OBD-II Port.

H

HOS

Hours of Service. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s regulations regarding the number of hours drivers can be behind the wheel before a break is required. Also frequency of breaks, and hours of rest.

Hot Start

The GPS device remembers the locations of the last satellites used, its own previous location, UTC time, and the ‘almanac’ of all satellite positions. Only works if user is in the same location as when the GPS was powered off.

HSPA

High Speed Packet Access. An amalgamation High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA), that extends and improves the performance of existing WCDMA protocols.

I

IDEN

Integrated Digital Enhanced Network. A mobile telecommunications technology using speech compression and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA).

IFTA

International Fuel Tax Association. Governing body responsible for collecting and distributing revenue between member states and Canadian provinces.

IMEI

International Mobile Equipment Identity. Unique identifier for each mobile device. The number has no relation to the subscriber.

IMSI

International Mobile Subscriber Identity. A unique identification associated with all GSM and UMTS network mobile phone users.

Intermediate Bulk Container

(or IBC) is a pallet mounted, industrial grade reusable container that is used for storing and transporting bulk liquids and powders.

Intrinsically Safe Design

Doesn’t explode; equipment and wiring is incapable of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy under normal or abnormal conditions to cause ignition of a specific hazardous atmospheric mixture in its most easily ignited concentration.

Keyhole Markup Language. Standard data format.

L

LandMark

A geographic location that can be used for reference and/or navigation purposes. LandMarks are user defined.

Latitude

Measurement of location on the Earth’s surface from north to south. Lines of latitude parallel the equator (0 degrees latitude). Measurements can be given in degrees, minutes, and seconds north or south, but are often converted into a decimal number. The Arctic Circle is located at 66° 33′ 39″ N, or 66.56083333333333.

Lat/Long

Abbreviation for Latitude/Longitude.

Location-based Services

A general class of computer program-level services used to include specific controls for location and time data as control features in computer programs. LBS include services to identify a location of a person or object, such as discovering the nearest banking cash machine or the whereabouts of a friend or employee. LBS include parcel tracking and vehicle tracking services.

Longitude

Measurement of location on the Earth’s surface from east to west. Lines of longitude are called ‘meridians’, with one line for each degree. Measurements can be given in degrees, minutes, and seconds east and west. The ‘prime meridian’ passes through Greenwich, Great Britain and has the measurement of 0 degrees.

L2000

L4000

M

M2M

Machine to Machine. Refers to technologies that allow both wireless and wired systems to communicate with other devices of the same ability. M2M uses a device (such as a sensor or meter) to capture an event (such as temperature, inventory level, etc.), which is relayed through a network (wireless, wired or hybrid) to an application (software program), that translates the captured event into meaningful information (for example, items need to be restocked).

MDT

Mobile Data Terminal. A computerized device used in public transit vehicles, taxicabs, courier vehicles, service trucks, commercial trucking fleets, military logistics, fishing fleets, warehouse inventory control, and emergency vehicles to communicate with a central dispatch office. A Garmin is an MDT.

Modem

A device that sends and receives data via SMS/Communications.

MSISDN

Mobile Subscriber Integrated Services Digital Network Number. A number uniquely identifying a subscription in a GSM or a UMTS mobile network. The telephone number to the SIM card in a mobile/cellular phone.

MWM

Mobile Workforce Management. Utilizes technology to monitor behaviors of employees in the field for planning, cost reduction, and service-improvement.

National Fleet Advisor

GPS Trackit’s branded title associated with Sales Representatives.

OAK

Owner Activation Kit. Promotional package designed to get owners to activate their subscriptions when unit received with purchase from dealership

OBD-II Port

Onboard Diagnostics Port. Used for diagnosing operating condition of a post-1996 car or truck. Located under the vehicle’s dashboard near the steering column. Tracking and/or locating units can plug into the OBD-II port to acquire operating information like engine run time, engine idle time, and other data.

OGC

Open Geospatial Consortium. An international voluntary consensus standards organization made up of more than 400 commercial, governmental, nonprofit and research organizations worldwide encouraging development and implementation of open standards for geospatial content and services, GIS data processing and data sharing.

OTA

Over The Air programming. Various methods of distributing software updates to cellular phones.

P

PEG

Programmable Event Generator. Monitors the vehicle environment and responds instantaneously to predefined threshold conditions related to time, date, motion, location, geo-zone, input, and other event combinations.

PHP

Hypertext Preprocessor. A general-purpose server-side scripting language, originally designed for Web development to produce dynamic web pages.

Ping

A signal used to promote a response from a device or system in a network.

PTCRB

Pseudo acronym for the PCS Type Certification Review Board. Provides framework within which cellular devices obtain type certification.

PTO (AKA Inputs)

Power Take-off. Refers to events, such as a hydraulic lift on a truck, that require power from the engine. These are additional inputs that can be monitored by a GPS Trackit product.

Rgeo

A representation of spatial vector data. It implements the industry standard OGC Simple Feature Access specification, providing classes for points, lines, polygons, and other geometric objects; as well as a full set of geometric operations such as finding intersections, creating buffers, calculating distances, etc. It also provides the tools needed to work with geographic coordinate systems and projections, and to read and write data in the well-known formats understood by spatial databases.

Resells GTC products and services. Customers are billed directly by GTC.

SFA

Simple Feature Access. Both an OpenGIS and ISO Standard that specifies a common storage model of geographical data.

SMS

Short Message Service. SMS text messaging is the most widely used data application in the world.

SIM Card

Subscriber Identity Module. An integrated circuit that securely stores the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) and the related key used to identify and authenticate subscribers on mobile telephony devices (such as mobile phones and computers).

SVN

Apache’s Subversion. GTC uses this for software development version control.

T

TCP (TCP/IP)

Transmission Control Protocol. One of the original Internet communication protocols, along with IP, or Internet Protocol. The two protocols work together, with TCP occupying the transport layer and IP the network layer in the OSI model.

TDMA

Time Division Multiple Access. A channel access method for shared medium networks allowing several users to share the same frequency channel by dividing the signal into different time slots.

Telematics

The technology of sending, receiving and storing information via telecommunication devices in conjunction with affecting control on remote objects.

TPMS

Tire Pressure Management System. Monitors and reports a vehicle’s tire pressure. Alerts when pressure exceeds or falls short of thresholds.

TTU

Trailer Tracking Unit. CalAmp’s 700 and 1200 models are used with GTC’s L2000 Trailer product and Fleet application.

Turn-by-Turn Navigation

A feature of some GPS navigation devices where directions for a selected route are continually presented to the user in the form of spoken and visual instructions. The system keeps the user up-to-date about the best route to the destination, and is often updated according to changing factors such as traffic and road conditions. Turn-by-turn systems typically use an electronic voice to inform the user whether to turn left or right, the street name, and how much distance to the turn.

T5000

A GPS satellite device offered by GPS Trackit. This device features international coverage, satellite coverage, a removable power harness, and location-on-demand capability.

UDP

User Datagram Protocol. A simple method for sending messages over networks like the Internet. With TCP, occupies the transport layer of the OSI model.

UMTS

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System. A third generation mobile cellular technology for networks based on the GSM standard.

USN

Unit Serial Number. Unique identifier of a mobile telecommunications device.

UTC Time

Coordinated Universal Time. Primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time.

VID Fleet™

Branded name for GPS Trackit’s videomatics solution.

Waypoints

Sets of coordinates that identify a point in physical space. Coordinates used can vary depending on the application. For terrestrial navigation these coordinates can include longitude and latitude.

WCDMA

Wide-band Code Division Multiple Access. An air interface standard found in 3G mobile telecommunications networks.

XML

Extensible Markup Language. A markup language that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable.
